What is your fitness story?

I was a competitive gymnast, starting at age 5, for about 8 years and I LOVED it, but unfortunately, I had a back injury that required me to stop. I was also a competitive downhill ski racer, but after a head injury in high school, I was stuck with only “no-contact” sports, and became involved with crew/rowing. As a small individual, I was a designated coxswain, the person who directs and steers the boat, but doesn’t do any actual “physical” work. Frustrated with this dilemma as an avid athlete myself, I heard about and tried CrossFit, and was immediately hooked! After 10+ years of taking classes and doing CrossFit competitively, I’ve ventured into new challenges and fitness pursuits as well, especially outdoor activities, including mountain biking, trail running, and even an off-road triathlon!

What is your favorite movement?

Anything upside down! Handstand holds, push ups, walks, spins, obstacle courses… My favorite lift is the clean.

What is your favorite quote?

“Make it happen”, or “The difference between good and great is just a little extra effort.” These were both mottos from my gymnastics days (way back when) and they’ve stuck with me ever since!

Advice for beginners?

Just start and keep showing up. Make a routine out of it. It can be intimidating at first, but it’s a process that everyone who’s there has been through. Don’t expect big changes right away, but if you put in the time and effort regularly (even if it’s just an hour a day), you WILL get stronger and healthier. Get to know people and make friends with the open community at 244, and you will have all the more reason to be there! Also, while exercise is key for a healthy lifestyle, attention to sleep and eating habits is just as important (if not more!).
