What is your fitness story?

Back in 2010, I was on my first deployment in Afghanistan and was looking for something to pass the time. This guy in my shop a few times a week would go to this weird website called crossfit.com and would find these what seemed to be interesting movements with random reps. I asked if I could join him and for the rest of my deployment I would join him a couple times a week and do whatever he said we had to do.

Upon returning back to normal life, I learned that I received orders to Italy. With preparing for the move and moving to a different country I put fitness on the back burner for a little. I soon realized that I needed to get back in the gym and when I arrived at the gym, one of the airmen gave me a tour of the gym and showed me what looked like a basement with loud music, no mirrors and people throwing weight around. I then noticed on the white board it said CrossFit Aviano. I was shocked and excited that people were also doing this fitness thing called CrossFit there in Italy. I joined them and this is where I truly fell in love with fitness and working out with a group of like-minded people.

In 2015 I moved to Arizona and built my own home gym. I wasn’t going to allow my fitness journey to be derailed by moving once again. I learned to love the grind and enjoyed suffering in silence. In 2018 I was talked into signing up for the CrossFit open. I went to a local gym and did all the workouts with them. I did surprisingly better than I ever imagined to include finishing in the top 90 in the region on one of the workouts.

To my surprise the base was finishing up their remodel on the gym and there was talks about starting a CrossFit box on base. I was then selected to become a coach and the base sent me to CrossFit Fury in Goodyear Arizona so I could get my Level 1 and the gym on base could be considered a Licensed Box. I also joined CrossFit Now, a local gym in Tucson. I wanted to be coached and I wanted to compete in this fitness thing. After being a member for a few months I was presented the opportunity to become a coach for CrossFit Now as well.

The military once again had a different idea for me and sent me to Texas for training that would last 2 months. While attending this training I was told about a gym that I should give a try and low and behold a member that had recently moved from Tucson was one of the first people I met. Over the next 2 months I got to workout with this guy a few times and got to talk to him and at one point he told me if I liked the workouts here and if I wanted to improve even more, I should try out this gym called Gym 244 back in Tucson. Come to find out this individual’s name is Charlie and is one of Chris Gartrell’s best friends.

Obviously I returned and went to Gym 244 to see what the hype was all about. As soon as you walk in this place you see all the banners of individuals and teams who made it to regionals and I knew this was going to be the place for me. I have been a member at Gym 244 now since 2019. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else and love the bonds that I have formed over the last few years.
